Latest mortgage news: Rising mortgage rates pile on the pressure and cool buyer demand.
Average mortgage rates have reached their three-year peak at 5.2%, according to the latest Zoopla House Price Index (HPI). This development sees borrowers take on an additional £150 a month – or £1,800 a year – on their typical mortgage repayments. With costs rising, affordability continues to present an issue for many and has subsequently had a knock-on effect on buyer demand. Agreed house sales fell across every region and country of the UK, the Zoopla HPI found.
Richard Donnell, Executive Director at Zoopla, commented that the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran has driven up energy prices and mortgage rates, “tempering the autumn rebound in housing activity”. He explained borrowing costs “are likely to remain elevated”.
And, with the lowest fixed residential mortgage rates climbing higher for yet another consecutive week, the market remains a maze for many. Seeking professional advice from a mortgage broker could help prospective buyers to understand their options, and what course of action may be best for them.
See below for the lowest fixed mortgage rates for remortgage borrowers, homemovers and first-time buyers. Alternatively, go to our charts to discover current mortgage rates UK lenders offer.
While we highlight the lowest rates, these aren’t always the best value once fees and incentives are factored in. If you’re unsure, it’s worth speaking to a mortgage broker for tailored advice.
