The story behind Moneyfactscompare.co.uk

At the dawn of the new millennium and once we all knew the Millennium bug hadn’t ended the world, John Woods, founder of Moneyfacts, made an important decision. He decided that the best way to help more people make better financial choices was to take the data from the printed Moneyfacts publication and put it into a digital form.

Moneyfacts.co.uk was born. A comparison site with a difference, designed to be completely independent and committed to providing you with the most up-to-date and impartial financial information possible.

In March 2023, the name of the website was changed to Moneyfactscompare.co.uk to reinforce its position as the completely independent money comparison website people have become familiar with over the years.

And today, we are still going strong, helping millions of people every year to make better financial choices.

Market coverage

For mortgages, savings, banking, credit cards and personal loans we cover the whole of the market (in practice it isn't possible to cover every single product from every provider so we aim to include at least 95% of providers).

We always include all the main providers in the UK and look to include overseas banks operating in the UK where these are actively targeting UK consumers. The companies we don't include tend to be small regional building societies or overseas banks which only offer services to limited markets in the UK.

For secured loans our service is based on a fair representation of the whole market.

For some product types our listings are purely commercial and based on companies that wish to pay a small fee for us to introduce customers. These areas on our site tend to be the less common products or services rather than the mainstream products like mortgages, savings and credit cards.

Our approach to the Consumer Duty changes

Moneyfactscompare.co.uk fully endorses the new Consumer Duty regulations implemented by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Over the past few months, we’ve been working hard to ensure our services comply with these rules and therefore offer better value for our users. Below, we’ve summarised some of the changes we’ve made to our website.

• Our chart pages used to include a tick box labelled “Quick Links”, which would determine if the rankings on our charts were ordered by deals with a commercial benefit. This has been redesigned and reworded to order the table by “Provider Links First” or “Rate Order”, making it easier for consumers to decide how to order the chart.
• All of our content is designed to make sure our users can get the best financial outcomes possible.

In addition, an assessment of how fair value affects the Moneyfactscompare.co.uk site was also carried out. It identified no issues and made note of the following:

• No customers pay directly for our services
• Products purchased via Moneyfactscompare are not priced differently than if the customer goes directly.
